Driving Tips & Hints for Low Vision & Disabled Drivers
Looking for Driving Hints and Tips or want to know how to get a driver's license despie a disability? See Me Drive is a place for people who would like to drive or are driving despite a low vision disability, are elderly or have a disability, to share hints, advice and their experiences with others. Reasons for not being able to drive may range from age (teenager, elderly...), suffering a stroke, birth disorders / genetics (albinism...) or eye disease (macular degeneration...) or simply aging. Either way there is a lot of hope for those with eye disorders that have been told for years that they could not legally drive an automobile. With the help of caring eye doctors and optic devices such as contact lenses or bioptics and of course a certain level of correctable vision, one may be able to drive despite their low vision disability.
I was told I would never drive until I visited a wonderful low vision specialist named Dr. William Park who was formerly with the Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. I was almost forty years of age when I found out that I could legally drive an automobile. Up until my visit to Dr. Park all the eye doctors and low vision specialists told me that I would never be able to drive because of my low vision. This web site is here simply to show that one should never give up their quest to drive a car despite any visual handicaps or obstacles. Please read my story: "How I Got My Driver's License At Age 39" for complete details and to understand the process I followed with my vision doctors and the motor vehicle administration. You are strongly encouraged to share your low vision driving tips and success stories by posting it to the site.

Not So Fast... Disclaimer
Please understand that not every person with low vision is able to drive. This is a very serious matter that needs to be discussed with those close to you and your low vision doctor. Not only must you have vision good enough for doctors to correct, but you must also be willing to accept the challenge and go through what can be a long and arduous process that can last a year or more. This site is NOT a medical or an authoritative driving site nor affiliated with any and information contained in it does not override professional advice. Every person has different needs and capabilities so use this site merely as a stepping stone and discuss everything with your doctor, DMV official, auto mechanic... first! See the many topics below and feel free to add your driving comments and share your experience. If you know of anyone who would benefit from this site please pass it on to them.
Thank You...
Lastly, I want to thank all the low vision doctors and thier staff as well as driver rehabilitation specialists... who devote their time and energy helping those with low vision realize our dream to drive. Without their help the freedom and sense of worth that I now enjoy by being able to drive would not be possible. Thank you so very, very much!
