Low Vision Driving Tips and Advice
Looking for Driving Hints and Tips or want to know how to get a driver's license despie a disability? See Me Drive is a place for people who would like to drive or are driving despite a low vision disability to share hints, advice and their experiences with others. Reasons for not being able to drive may range from age (teenager, elderly...), suffering a stroke, birth disorders / genetics (albinism...) or eye disease (macular degeneration...) or simply aging. Either way there is a lot of hope for those with eye disorders that have been told for years that they could not legally drive an automobile. With the help of caring eye doctors and optic devices such as contact lenses or bioptics and of course a certain level of correctable vision, one may be able to drive despite their low vision disability.
I was told I would never drive until I visited a wonderful low vision specialist named Dr. William Park at the Wilmer Eye Institute at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland (UPDATE: Dr. William Park is now in the Department of Ophthalmology at West Virginia University). I was almost forty years of age when I found out that I could legally drive an automobile. Up until my visit to Dr. Park all the eye doctors and low vision specialists told me that I would never be able to drive because of my low vision. This web site is here simply to show that one should never give up their quest to drive a car despite any visual handicaps or obstacles. Please understand that not every person with low vision is able to drive. This is a very serious matter that needs to be discussed with those close to you and your low vision doctor. Not only must you have vision good enough for doctors to correct, but you must also be willing to accept the challenge and go through what can be a long and arduous process that can last a year or more.
